OMC Hosting a Free Education Dinner on Obesity September 27

Ozarks Medical Center (OMC) will offer a free community education dinner Thursday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. at OMC Parkway Center.  Dr. Magdy Giurgius, Board Certified General and Bariatric Surgeon at Ozarks Medical Center Surgical Specialists Clinic will speak on health risks associated with obesity and weight loss surgery options available at OMC. 

Dinner is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 417-257-6793. 

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery defines obesity as a disease in which fat has accumulated to the extent that health is impaired. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects about 93.3 million U.S. adults. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. 

Dr. Giurgius joined OMC Surgical Specialists Clinic in 2015. Dr. Guirgius graduated from Faculty of Medicine, University of Alexandria, Egypt in 1995. He obtained his Master degree in 2000 during his general surgery residency at the University of Alexandria Hospital, with his thesis on Early Detection of Breast Cancer. Dr. Giurgius practiced as a general surgeon in Kuwait for six years working in a level one trauma Hospital where he also performed advanced laparoscopic procedures. In 2006, he moved to the United States and served as a chief resident at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, KY. He completed his Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. In 2017, Dr. Giurgius was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

While he performs general surgery at OMC, he especially enjoys bariatric (weight loss) surgery and working with patients on their weight loss journey.
