Community Betterment Award Program Sept. 12

The Ava and Douglas County community is invited to attend the Missouri Community Betterment (MCB) Awards Program. The judging process for this award will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in the Ava City Hall board room.  Judging begins at 1:45 p.m.

For the occasion, the Ava Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee selected two projects promoting Ava and surrounding areas.

The first project is The Pioneer Heritage Festival of the Ozarks which was held at Chapel Grove last year in October.  The festival featured Ozark heritage artisans exhibiting and demonstrating skills such as weaving spinning, basket making, blacksmithing, and flint knapping. The festival is slated to be a yearly event.

The second project selected for judging is the 2500 Miles of Arts & Culture, a seven-day event held in April 2018. Event activities began on a Monday, and each day thereafter, a different event or activity was planned.  Several days also included night time activities as well.  The week-long schedule included tours, points of interest, and historical sites.  The Ava Art Guild, along with the Ava School’s String Project, provided a few of the cultural experiences.  According to organizers, the event gave the Ava/Douglas County an opportunity to showcase areas of tourism, and was deemed successful.  It will also be held annually.

The award program scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 12 is open to the public and residents are urged to attend.
