Ava Middle School Splits Decisions With Houston

The Ava Middle School football teams played the Houston Tigers at Silvey Field on Thursday, Sept. 14.
The visitors from Houston won an exciting 7th grade contest 28-24.
Houston scored on their first possession of the game to take a 6-0 lead, but the Bears answered with a score of their own. A 21 yard touchdown run by Hunter Hall capped a six play, 51-yard drive. Hall also ran for the conversion to give the Bears an 8-6 lead.
Houston scored the next two touchdowns to take a 20-8 lead. Ava’s Josh Springer ran 61 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half.
Ashton Stout passed to Ben Manzolillo for the conversion, closing the halftime deficit to four points. The Bears regained the lead early in the fourth quarter when Stout connected with Springer for a 56-yard touchdown. Stout then ran for the conversion to give the Bears a 24-20 lead.
The Houston team responded with a nine play scoring drive that consumed most of the time remaining in the game. The Bears threatened, but were stopped at the Houston 35 yard line.
Ava won the 8th grade contest 44-16. The Bears scored on their first possession of the game. The nine play, 75-yard drive was capped by a 1-yard run by Zach Richards. Richards passed to Corey Heinlein for the conversion and the 8-0 advantage.
Houston would also score on their first possession of the game to tie the game at 8-8.
Spencer Skyles ran 77 yards for a touchdown on the first scrimmage play of Ava’s next possession. Richards then passed to Skyles for the conversion and the 16-8 lead.
The Bears scored again late in the first half when Aiden Duckett ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Richards again passed to Skyles for the conversion to increase the lead to 24-8.
The Bears added to their lead early in the third quarter when Richards rushed one yard for a touchdown to cap a 5 play, 45 yard drive.
Ava’s next score came at the beginning of the fourth quarter when a screen pass from Richards to Skyles resulted in a 74-yard touchdown. Richards followed that touchdown with the run for the two point conversion.
The final score of the night for the Bears occurred shortly after recovering a Houston fumble on their next play from scrimmage. Kage Stewart carried the ball for consecutive runs of 17 and 18 yards to get the ball into the end zone for the Bears.
