Douglas County Schools Will Start Classes Next Thursday

Some schools in the area are starting classes this week, but for Douglas County public schools, next Thursday, Aug. 17, is the first day of classes.
Ava R-1, Skyline R-2 and Plainview R-8 will each begin the 2017-18 term on Aug. 17. Prior to opening, there are open house and other orientation events on the calendar.
The first day of school at Ava will be Aug. 17, but prior to the first day of classes, open house events will be held as well as freshman orientation for high school students.
Kindergarten open house will be held Monday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m.; open house for 5th grade students making the transition to middle school will also be held on Aug. 14 at 6 p.m.; and District Open House will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Freshman Link Crew will be from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and freshman orientation will be held at 5 p.m. on Aug. 15, in the Ava Performing Arts Center (APAC).
Lunch prices at Ava will be:
Elementary students – 40¢ reduced; $1.70 full pay.
Middle/high school students – 40¢ reduced; $1.85 full pay.
Extra milk is 40¢ for all students.
Breakfast is free for all students.
Free and reduced lunch guidelines have been published in the Herald and enrollment forms will be available to all students on the first day of school.
Open house at Skyline R-2 School will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 15, with the first day of classes being Aug. 17.
Bradleyville School’s Beta Club will sponsor a Back to School Bash during the school’s open house on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
Open house will be from 5 to 7 p.m. and during that time parents adn students will have an opportunity to meet teachers, administrators and school board members.
Beta Club will provide all students with free school supplies, and games and fun activities will be held. Free haircuts will also be available to students.
