The 2017 Missouri State Fair will celebrate Senior Appreciation Day, sponsored by the Sedalia Democrat, on Wednesday Aug. 16. Adults and seniors presenting a special Sedalia Democrat front page Fair banner will receive $2 off gate admission on this day. Lots of fun events for seniors are planned in the Mathewson Exhibition Center including: • Vendor Exhibits, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. • Line Dancing Lessons, 11:30 • Senior Dance Contest, 1 – 3 p.m. Visit the Missouri State Fair website for complete details on Senior Appreciation Day. The Senior Citizens Lounge, sponsored by AT&T and Nabholz Construction, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 16th offering refreshments, air-conditioning and free tram rides for seniors. Bothwell Regional Health Center will be offering free blood pressure screenings for seniors in the lounge on this day as well. Aug. 16 also features the Show-Me Bluegrass Festival. The Bluegrass Festival offers some of Missouri’s best bluegrass pickers. Bring the Kids for Some Fair Fun The State Fair offers many events just for kids! There’s nothing like the look of excitement on a little one’s face as he or she experiences all the fun the State Fair has to offer! Here’s a sneak peak at some of the great entertainment offered for our littlest fairgoers: • The Family Fun Center is designed with the youngest fairgoers in mind and offers lots of creative play and interactive activities for kids age 8 and younger. The building is air-conditioned, and offers kids a chance to climb in or climb on, dig in, paint, and use their imaginations. The building also includes a baby feeding and changing area for families with young children with supplies donated by Walmart. • Hedrick’s Petting Zoo, sponsored by Sam’s Club, offers an educational and entertaining experience for children to learn about exotic animals. • The Children’s Barnyard gives kids a chance to see farm animals up close. Feed for the Barnyard is provided by Kent. • Barnyard Story Time is back this year with a new location, just outside the Children’s Barnyard, Aug. 10-19. 4-H and FFA youth exhibitors will be sharing their favorite agricultural story books with young fairgoers. • The Kid’s Zone includes the Kids Stage, sponsored by McDonalds of Mid-Missouri, and offers a variety of performances including the Chicago Honey Bear Dancers and Steve Gryb, the Pied Piper of Percussion, along with a free playground for kids to climb on, slide down and run around! Public Camping Line Up Information The public campground will open by 9 a.m., on Thursday, Aug. 3. • The public camping line up process will not start any earlier than the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 1. • A fee of $10 per night will be collected by campground staff for those units choosing to line up prior to the campgrounds opening the morning of Aug. 3. • Campers MUST enter the fairgrounds at the Centennial Gate, or Gate 12, located on 65 Hwy which will open by 7 am, Tuesday, Aug. 1. • Starting then, campground staff will line up campers and start going through the line to issue permits in numerical order. • Permits will be given to camping units only (motor homes or vehicles pulling campers); other vehicles (without campers) lining up to save a space will not be issued a number. • Payment in cash is preferred; credit cards (Mastercard, Visa and Discover) are accepted, however they do slow down the line. • No campers may be left in the line-up area unattended. • The public campground will open by 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 3, and campers will be accepted in the order of their permit number. Please note – No early line up will be allowed and no early numbers will be distributed. Line up numbers will be issued starting the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 1. In the interest of public safety, the Missouri State Fair reserves the right to start allowing campers into the public campground prior to 9 am, Thursday, Aug 3, in the order of the permit number. Missouri State Fair Idol The Budweiser Stage will once again be the host for the 2017 Missouri State Fair Idol Contest, sponsored by Bimbo Bakeries USA. Preliminary rounds will take place at 4 p.m. on Aug. 10-13; Semi-final rounds are 4 p.m. on Aug. 17-19; and the final round will be at 2 p.m. on Aug. 20. Entries are due July 21.
