Douglas County Shows Improvements in Auditor Galloway’s Latest Review
New report shows areas of improvement, and where the county is still falling short
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (Nov. 30, 2016) Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has issued a follow-up report to an audit of the Douglas County government. The original audit received a performance rating of poor, and a follow-up review was completed to determine whether the county made improvements since the original audit was released in March of 2016.
The prosecuting attorney also made improvements to shorten the amount of time it takes for crime victims to receive money owed to them. New processes ensure that when money is awarded to victims in court cases, it is processed and sent to the victims as quickly as possible. The previous report raised concerns with the amount of time it took for victims to receive money awarded to them, even after the money had been paid to the prosecuting attorney’s office.
The sheriff’s office is making improvements handling items confiscated during criminal investigations, and is in the process of conducting an inventory of seized property and disposing of old seized property.
The county does need to do additional work to ensure county employment policies comply with federal law. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides 12 weeks of protected, unpaid leave related to the birth or care of a child, but county policy currently only allows expectant mothers to take six weeks of unpaid leave. County officials are in the process of reviewing and revising their policies.
