Ava R-I Takes Tip Seriously, Quells Student with Unloaded Gun

By Sue Curry Jones

As the Douglas County Herald goes to press on Tuesday due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Ava R-I administration issues the following statement about today’s gun incident at the high school.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Jason Dial offers the following assurance, and information, about the incident:

“Ava High School administration received an anonymous tip that a student was in possession of a firearm at school today.  Immediately upon receiving that tip, adminis-tration escorted the student to the office and searched the student’s personal belongings and found an unloaded firearm in their possession.

“The Ava police department was contacted and they responded and assisted in the investigation.

“At no time were any students in immediate danger but we take any instance of a weapon on school property very seriously and will follow BOE policy accordingly.”
