Veterans Assn. Will Host Free Cookout Saturday

The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Association will be celebrating Labor Day weekend by providing a free hamburger and hot dog cookout. Military veterans, firefighters, law enforcement, first responders, EMTs, postal workers, doctors, nurses and school teachers,  as well as the general public, are invited to come to the post at 402 West Washington Ave. across from the Post Office and help celebrate with all these courageous workers in our city, county and community.

The cookout will begin serving at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and will continue until 1 o’clock.  The first 200 participants will also be served a dish or a cone of ice cream.  Jerry Garrison, commander, invites parents or grandparents to bring their young ones down to have an ice cream cone with a veteran even if they don’t want a burger or hot dog.

The free lunch is open to the public, however, there will be a donation box available for anyone wanting to donate and assist the efforts.

In addition to the free lunch celebration, the veterans will also have many other activities happening.

On Friday, Sept. 2,  the veterans, in cooperating with Ava Drug,  will be offering free flu shots to all veterans from 11-12 o’clock.  The veterans must bring their veterans ID with them.

The military artwork of Katie West will also be on display along with her cards utilizing a military theme.

The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Association will also be concluding a drawing for a motorcycle trailer at 2 p.m. on Saturday. World War II veteran Adrain Owen will draw the winning ticket.
