Mt. Zion News

The National Day of Prayer was observed Thursday, May 1. About 30 people gathered on the Ava square to pray at noon. Bob Thompson, Jr. pastor of the Mt. Zion Church of God (holiness) organized the 40 minute service. The group sang four patriotic songs, accompanied by Barbara Uhles on the accordian. Various ministers from the community prayed for our federal, state and local government, armed forces, law enforcement, schools, families and churches. Those participating included pastors Oren Alcorn, Mike Banks, Dwayne Moore, Danny Letsinger and the chaplain of our sheriff’s department. Ten members from our congregation attended: Pastor Bob and Sister Cinda Thompson, Linda Ferguson, Phyllis Arnold, Bill and Jeanette Cardin, Dennis and Barbara Uhles, Mary and Bob Thompson, Sr.

In two consecutive Wednesday evening services, a summary of the book of Ezkiel was given by our pastor. Sunday morning’s special music was a vocal duet by our pastor and his wife. In the evening service Barbara Uhles sang a vocal solo. Jesse Paxton led the congregational singing in both services.

Pastor Bob’s sermon Sunday morning was “The Deceptive Heart” from Luke 22. Jesus said, “Satan hath desired you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not.” Are we wheat or chaff? Difficulties are as necessary and beneficial for the soul as winnowing is for the wheat. Jesus’ prayer paved the way for Peter to repent.

Sister Cinda Thompson’s message Sunday night was “The Sifting of Our Faith.” Brother John Venzia is faithful in the Amen corner. Jim and Elaine Hanson were visitors Sunday night.

On Saturday, May 3, we helped Donald and Alona Fitzgerald and their two children move to their newly purchased home south of Ava. Sisters Cinda and Mary Thompson served lunch to the movers: James Cox, Earnest Murray, Dana and Alex Fourman, Sheena Mahan, Jeanette and Bill Cardin, Dennis Uhles, Pastor Bob Thompson and his father. The Fitzgeralds have attended Mt Zion Church since moving to the area in December.

Graduation was held at Mt. Zion Bible School Tuesday evening, May 6. Mrs. Debbie Cox was organist for the processional and the recessional. The Pledges were led by Andrew Fleetwood (American Flag), Ashlynne Moore (Christian Flag), and Charity Bagley (Bible). Jessica Fleming led the congregation in singing. Elizabeth Fleming sang a vocal solo. Mrs. Dana Fourman presented the music awards. Mrs. Linda Murray presented other awards. Rev. Bob Thompson, Jr. gave the address. Mrs. Cheryl Paxton presented the four kindergarten graduates: Kylie Adams, Jayce Elwood, Bella Fleetwood, and Chloe Scofield. Rev. Darrell Swearengin presented the two eighth grade graduates: Elizabeth Fleming and Austin Waskom. Their diplomas were awarded by Mr. Rob Fleming, the school board chairman. Mr. Billy Clouse gave the benediction.

Correction for last week’s Mt. Zion News: three students from M.Z.B.S. were awarded a total of 17 medals at the A.C.E. Regional Convention. Elizabeth Fleming received 6, Jessica Fleming received 10, and Calli Murray received 1.
