Herbert Robert (Herb) Porter, 93

Herbert Robert (Herb) Porter, 93 entered this world Sept. 17, 1920 near Girdner, Mo., the son of Charley Elmer and Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Plumb Porter.  He departed this life Jan. 24, 2014 at his home a short distance from his place of birth.
Herb proudly served his country in the US Army Air Force during World War II. For his service in Europe and England he was awarded four Bronze Stars as well as other medals.
He worked in the Kansas City area several years before returning to his beloved Douglas County hills. He enjoyed watching his jumping mules on the farm.    He loved being with people but his favorite time was the time spent with family and grandchildren, especially skating or floating.
He loved pulling pranks and jokes on people and watching their reaction.  He also enjoyed music and often attended jam sessions and 4th Sunday singings in the area.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters; and his wife and the mother of his children, Bernadine Marie Lister Porter.
He is survived by four children,  Sharon Skaggs, Danny Porter,  Jody Porter, and Candyce Porter; as well as nine grandchildren: Shelly, Justin Dean, Jason William Robert, Jacob Dale, Pam Jennifer, Danyel Renea, Charles Robert, Lyndsey Nicole, and Nathan. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren: Skyelar Dean, Madelynn Shane, Jacob, Bryon Lee Tylor, Kimber Leann Marie, Johnathan Eugene, Abbagale, Renea, Clayton David, Matthew Neal, Earnest Robert, and Max Thomas. He also leaves one sister, Alice Welch.
His smile and laughter will be deeply missed by a host of other relatives and friends.
Cremation arrangements were under the care and direction of Ava Family Funeral Home.
A memorial service was held Sunday, May 25, at 2:30 p.m., at Athel Jackson’s jamboree building on N Highway.
