Swabbing out the ear wax can irritate or injure the delicate lining of the ear canal, causing itchiness or bleeding and increasing the risk of ear infection. If you have lots of wax, swabs can push it deeper into the ear canal, where it hardens. That can cause hearing loss, dizziness, or pain. If it becomes necessary to remove the wax, use ear drops such as carbamide peroxide or docusate sodium. Don’t use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum or are prone to ear infections.
