County Will Open Bids Thursday For New Rome Bridge

The Douglas County Commission will open bids at 9 a.m. this morning for construction for a new bridge at Rome.
Presiding Commissioner Larry Pueppke said details have been worked out with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) for a Bridge Replacement grant – commonly referred to as BRO – for $900,000 to replace the old steel bridge across Beaver Creek.
Pueppke said the first step in this process is the selection of an engineering firm to draw up plans and oversee the construction process.
As for the future of the old bridge, Pueppke said the new bridge may likely not be at the same location as the steel bridge. The landmark bridge could be left in place as a historic symbol, or it could be “sold” to individuals or an organization that might wish to take it down and do something with it.
Anyone interested in assuming an interest in the old steel bridge must consider the cost of taking it down and/or the liability involved in leaving it in place.
