Ava Senior Center

Our menu for this week is Monday, July 22—Chicken wings, mac ‘n cheese, baked beans, ice cream.  Tuesday, July 23—Frito pie, corn, refried beans, fruit crisp.  Wednesday, July 24—Ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, roll, jell-o with fruit.  Thursday, July 25—Meatloaf, baked potato, California blend vegetables, roll, cookie.  Friday, July 26—Ham and beans, potatoes, tomatoes, cornbread, fruit.

The jam session continues to be a good thing for our community.  Our attendance (140) didn’t break the week before, but it was the best-looking crowd yet!!

Come by for sausage and biscuit and gravy on Saturday, September 7.

The activities around the Center this week include Monday—Jam session 6-9.  Tuesday—Tai chi senior exercise class 10, OATS bus to Branson.  Wednesday—OATS bus to rural Ava.  Thursday—Driver exam 9:30-3:30.  Friday—Tai chi senior exercise class 10, OATS bus to rural Ava.

The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is so heart-healthy that you might expect it to be tasteless and even difficult to follow.  But it’s not, and it’s okay to make changes gradually.  The plan is heavy on vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein, and light on saturated fat, added sugars, and salt.  Studies have found that the DASH diet can lower blood pressure and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, but not at the expense of satisfying your taste buds.  Portion sizes need to be carefully monitored, and keeping to the daily sodium recommendation can be a challenge.

I don’t have the information about the pitch tournament on Tuesday, July 2, but the winners in the pinochle tournament from last Wednesday, July 10 were Ray Nute (1272), Pat Murray (1054) and Annabelle Walker (1045). Five games were played with two tables present.

Winners in the pitch tournament from this Tuesday (July16) were Max Decker (221), Hulda Tipton (219) and Bonnie Coffey ((213).  Five tables were gathered and five games were played.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.
