St. Francis Church

Sunday, May 12 was the Sunday after Ascension Day, which was Thursday. In his sermon Bishop Hartley noted that the old term for this day was Expectation Sunday because it is the time in the church year of expectation or waiting for Christ’s return in the form of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the gospel for the day, St. John 15, “When the comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.”

Friday, May 10 was a big day for us as our acolyte Lincoln Connell graduated from Norwood High as the Valedictorian of the class of 2013. He gave an excellent speech based on the theme of “Carpe Diem” or seize the day from the Roman poet Horace. He also introduced the other members of the class who are entering the U.S. military forces and they received a round of applause. Also during the ceremony Lincoln was given his certificate of appointment to West Point which he will enter as a cadet in July. I drove over to join his parents, Brian and Stephanie and brother, Chandler for the ceremony. Also attending from St. Francis were Rita Fancher and Leo and Carrie Compton. Lincoln’s girlfriend, Hannah, was also down from the her home in Warrenton, MO. After the ceremony we all enjoyed a party at the Connell home.
