One in three adults has high blood pressure, called the ‘silent killer.’ High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, means the blood running through your arteries with too much force and puts pressure on your arteries, stretching them past their healthy limit and causing microscopic tears. Our body then kicks into injury-healing mode to repair these tears with scar tissue. But unfortunately, the scar tissue traps plaque and white blood cells which can form into blockages, blood clots, and hardened, weakened arteries. The normal blood pressure is 120 over 80. To help reduce your blood pressure, you can eat a heart healthy diet, watching portions and reducing sodium; have regular physical activity (walking is good); maintaining a healthy weight; managing stress; and avoiding alcohol and tobacco products.

Drug companies want you to look at the brand name, but you should focus on the active ingredient. Take Tylenol for example. The active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is in dozens of products—not just Tylenol. That’s one reason overdoses are common. And that’s not good, because even slight overdoses of acetaminophen can be toxic to your liver. To protect yourself, read the label and don’t use more than one drug containing acetaminophen at a time.
When people see a cat’s litter box, they always say, “Oh, have you got a cat?” Just once I want to say, “No, it’s for company!”
Until next week, have a good one!
