Ava Senior Center

Our menu for this week includes:  Monday, February 4—Cheeseburger and fixin’s, savory potatoes, coleslaw, ice cream.  Tuesday, February 5—Salisbury steak, rice, corn, cake.  Wednesday, February 6—Bone-in chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, bread, strawberries and bananas.  Thursday, February 7—Cook’s choice.  Friday, February 8—Cashew chicken, egg roll, rice, Oriental vegetables, jell-o with fruit.

It has been proven that vitamins and vitamin supplements are not as beneficial as the value from real foods, so here is a list of foods you can eat to get the proper vitamins:  Vitamin A—liver, dried apricots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, carrots.  Vitamin B1—sesame seeds, pistachios, pecans, macadamia nuts, pork chops.  Vitamin B2—dry roasted soybeans, sun-dried tomatoes, Brie, Roquefort and Limburger cheese, mackerel, salmon and trout.  Vitamin B3—anchovies, tuna, swordfish, peanuts, bacon, veal, sun-dried tomatoes.  Vitamin B5—whey powder, avocados, mushrooms, caviar.  Vitamin B6—crude rice, wheat bran, dried herbs and spices, lean pork tenderloin, garlic, hazelnuts.

Our activities for this week include:  Monday—OATS bus to Springfield.  Tuesday—Tai chi senior exercise class 10:30, Pitch Tournament.  Wednesday—OATS bus rural Ava to Ava.  Thursday—Driver’s exam in the basement 9:30-3:30, Douglas County Health Department blood pressure screenings 9:30-10:30.  Friday—OATS bus rural Ava to Ava.

To save a little on your electric bill, unplug unnecessary appliances when not using.  Take a few minutes to scrub your stove top burners and reflectors.  A clean range reflects heat better.  Install weather-stripping around your attic hatch and seal any cracks and gaps around your windows.  Turn your water heater to a temperature of 120 degrees as measured at the faucet.

Can you believe that physically active older people experienced less brain shrinkage than those who were solving crossword or sudoku puzzles and those taking ginkgo biloba supplements?  It is true from a study done in October last year.  So, seniors, get out and get active!
