Lady Bears Beat Cabool at Home; Fall to Lebanon on the Road

BBgirlsvsCabool.126The Ava Lady Bears defeated Cabool in SCA action at home last Thursday night, 66-49, but lost to Lebanon on the road in non-conference play Monday, 60-38.
Last Thursday night the Ava girls held an 18-14 lead after one quarter and led by the same 4-point margin at the half, 30-26.
The Ava girls outscored Cabool 21-6 in the third period to expand their lead and take control of the game.
Hannah Johnson led Ava with 15 points and Erica Croney added 12. Bailey Lee was also in double figures with 10 points.
Others scoring for the Lady Bears were Jacey Swofford 9, Callie Eubanks 6, Maison Bovard 6, and Rachel Swofford, MaKenna Hunsaker, Shelby Campbell and Lakota Blakey with 2 each.
Sophomore Sarah Gray led Cabool with 20 points and classmate Brittany Whetstine added 13.
At Lebanon Monday night the Ava girls jumped out to a 7-0 lead then gave up nine points straight to trail 9-7 after one period. The Lady Bears came back to lead the Yellowjackets 21-20 at halftime, but were outscored 20-2 in the third quarter.
Lee led the Ava team with 17 points but was the only player in double figures. Others scoring were Croney 7, Bovard 6, Campbell 5, and Johnson 3.
Jenna Mitchell led Lebanon with 13 and Maggie Vaughn had 11 points for the home team.
The Lady Bears will play Conway at home tonight (Thursday), and will see action in the Reeds Spring Tournament next week.
The Lady Bears are seeded fourth at Reeds Spring and will play No. 5 Hollister in the first round at 6:30 Monday.
Top seed West Plains will play Hurley (7) at 5 o’clock Monday.
Second seed Blue Eye, No. 3 Reeds Spring and No. 6 Forsyth will compete in pool play during the week to determine who will advance to the championship on Friday night, Jan. 25.
Last Thursday, the Ava Lady Bears junior varsity squad defeated the Cabool junior varsity team by a score of 39-14. Leading the way for the Lady Bears was McKenna Hunsaker with 12. Also scoring for the Lady Bears: Jacey Swofford 8, Hope Evans 7, Lakota Blakey 4, Ashley Helm 4, and Tailer Stofer 4.
Scoring for Cabool were Matherly Kara 4, Dominique Loman 2, Kelsey Drone 2, Casey Fox 2, Katelyn Grogan 2, and Taylor Huckaby 2.
On Monday night, the JV Lady Bears traveled to Lebanon where they were defeated 64-31. Scoring for the Lady Bears: Jacey Swofford 10, Hunter Shelton 7, Stofer 5, Hunsaker 4, Megan Cooper 2,  Evans 2, and Callie Eubanks 1.
Those scoring for the Yellowjackets included: Callahan 16, Schafer 12, Ivey 11, Peace 10, Qualls 6, Anderson 5, and Cobleigh 4.
