Dogwood Ramblings

Perhaps I am just slow on the uptake but, it sure was a surprise when I pulled into the KFC/Long John’s place last week and found everything shut down, many jobs lost.  Douglas Co. Animal Hospital is shut down.  The gas station across from the Pizza Hut is shut down.  Again, jobs lost.  Matter of fact, there are several closed and empty homes, buildings and businesses in Ava.  This happened in the 1980s, again in the 1990s, and we lost many a dairy farm in that time period and have even fewer now, including me.

I see in the Herald where the city is planning a skate park now.  Who is going to pay for this?  You can’t get city and county taxes from shut down businesses, just like we couldn’t afford adding to our school buildings a few years ago out by the ball field.  We have more and more people “visiting” the Food Harvest and more and more people trying to survive on welfare.  We are now sending food bags home from school on Fridays so the wee youngsters have something good to eat on the weekends.  Seems to me it is time to put the brakes on public spending, also we need to be trying to get new businesses going, and helping the down-trodden lift themselves up….not expecting the taxpayers to foot every bill.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.  … Abraham Lincoln

These profound words are as applicable now as they were in the 1860s.  The problem seems to be that the leadership of this nation has not studied history of either this nation or of other nations.  Possibly they are only interested in their narcissistic selves being in the news, and padding their pockets, now and for their futures – not ours.

We had a bit of ice here on Dogwood Hill.  My deck was much too icy to walk out on and the driveway was slick as can be late Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  The ice finally dissipated off the tree branches and my windows on Monday.  Y’all can laugh at me but at my age, I don’t take chances on ice.  Willie used to say, and rightly so, that I was as bad on ice as an old cow.

Pray for our neighbors, and for our country.  Pray that all will adhere to God’s message – will read and take to heart the bible and the lessons it has for us.
