Burl Maggard, 81

Burl Maggard, 81 of Bradleyville, died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at his residence.  Visitation for Mr. Maggard will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 12 in the Kissee-Schofield-Eakins Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the White River Association Youth Camp, Taneyville with the Revs. Jeff Marsh, Corby Lux and David Koenig officiating.  Burial will be in the Patterson Cemetery, Bradleyville.
Henry Thomas Burl Maggard was born Monday, July 21, 1930 to Alfred W. and Adah E. (O’Neal) Maggard in Bradleyville.  He grew up in Bradleyville and graduated from high school in 1949.  On Oct. 28, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Helen H. Blair.  They stayed in Bradleyville and he worked as a mechanic and owned and drove a school bus for 51 years.  He was also the postmaster of Bradleyville for 22 years, retiring in 1992.  Burl was also a board member of White River Electric Cooperative.
Burl was a man of diverse interests and talents.  He enjoyed coon hunting, farming, training jumping mules, deer hunting, playing the guitar and singing.  He was very active in the New Mansion Church.  His strong faith enabled him to play and sing in church, volunteer for any church activity, including trustee, and play practical jokes on the people he loved. He referred to his first cousin as, “Aunt Ruth.”
Burl is survived by his wife, Helen; three daughters, Treva Herd and husband, David, of Columbia, Jewell Maggard, of Columbia, and Sherry Henning and husband, Jerry, of Thornfield; three grandchildren, Nicholas Herd, Sarah Jo Nash and Isaac Henning; great-grandchildren, Reagan and Landon Herd; extended grandchildren, James, Ray and Myriah, Raegen, Ty, Kaylee, Wyatt and Hannah and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Delbert, Manford, Arnold and Rex Maggard; three sisters, Pauline, Velma and Thelma.
