Ava Area Animal Welfare League Junior Met March 20, 2012.

The Ava Area Animal Welfare League Junior met in monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 20th. Members in attendance were Karen Davis, Mary Chipps, Pat Patton, Marilyn Alms, and Betty Stout. (Attendance was down in part due to the rainy weather and flooding.)

Members discussed the upcoming fund raising events and made plans to volunteer at some of the venues. Some members plan to be at the Ava Farmer’s Market on May 1st to sell potted shamrocks. Other members have planned work schedules for the up coming Ava City Wide Yard Sale event June 7-9.

April is “Prevention of Animal Cruelty” month. Members discussed several ideas for fund raising that could be focused around this event. Nothing has been decided at this time. Please tune into KKOZ radio for updates if/when these are in place.

We have just learned (unofficially) that we have won another “I’m Pet Friendly” grant. This is a grant supported by individuals who purchase specialty license plates with the “I’m Pet Friendly” logo. These monies are used to help promote low cost spay/neuter programs throughout the state. We should get an official notice in the next few weeks stating the dollar amount of this grant. We appreciate everyone who helped get this grant written and submitted. These grant funds keep our AAAWLJ efforts going and help reduce the number of unwanted pets in our community. Last year, the grant monies helped 64 pet owners get their pets spayed or neutered while the monies generated locally (primarily donations and the yard sale) helped 52 other pet owners.

Our most recent efforts on the Cats Only spay/neuter program has already helped 69 pet owners this year for a total cost of $1,200.00. The AAAWLJ was only able to offer $600.00 initially for this program; however, individual donations matched this amount providing more help to local pet owners. We really appreciate those individuals for the additional monies.

Our next meeting date will be April 26th, at 3:30 PM in Mrs. Karen Davis classroom located on the Ava R-1 schools campus. New members are always welcomed.
