Richard Eugene Woodall, 85 years, passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare Center, Ava, Mo. His mind and spirit were strong but his body could no longer fight the prostate cancer.
Richard was born Nov. 25, 1926 in Burlington, Iowa, to Thomas and Mary (Anderson) Woodall. Richard grew up around the Burlington area. When his country called he served in World War II where he saw duty in Japan and later reenlisted and saw duty in Germany. Upon returning home from the Army, Richard relocated to the Quad City area of Iowa. He worked at various jobs including truck driving which later became his career of 27 years as a Teamster Driver, primarily for Interstate System Trucking Co., Milan, Ill.
On Dec. 22, 1951 Richard and Thelma Sanders were united in marriage at Yellville, Ark. To this union three children were born.
Richard and his family moved to the Ava community in 1977. He was employed by Mansteel, Hutchens Industries, in Mansfield, Mo. After 11 years there he looked forward to enjoying retirement and “the golden years.” Richard and Thelma traveled the country visiting relatives in California and Iowa. As casinos became more popular in the Midwest he loved trying his luck with the “one armed bandits.” He probably lost more than he won but was always looking for the big jackpot.
He enjoyed listening to Hank Williams Sr., Ernest Tubb, Dave Dudley, Bill Monroe and Buck Owens. Richard was an avid sports fan – a devoted Iowa Hawkeyes fan from his years in Iowa. He loved going to the local dirt tracks for the stock car races and to Iowa for the sprint car races.
Richard was his given name, but was never used by those that knew him. To them, he was Bud, Buddy, Woody, Whitey, Dad, and Grandpa.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Fred and Raymond Woodall, four sisters, Edith, Dorothy, Maxine and Gladys.
Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Thelma E. Woodall, Ava; three children and their spouses, Barbara and Richard Payne, Muscatine, Iowa, Todd and Sara Woodall, Tehachapi, Calif., and Penny and Mike Miracle, Ozark, Mo.; three grandsons, Mathew Woodall, Bakersfield, Calif., Nathan Payne, Muscatine, Iowa, and Brandon Miracle, Ozark, Mo.; one great-granddaughter, Kamryn Woodall, Bakersfield, Calif.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and two very special people, Carl and Bonnie Boehl of LeClaire, Iowa. A special thanks to them for all their love and support during this difficult time.
