Bears Games Result In Lopsided Finishes

The Ava Bears played in two games that resulted in blowout results during the past week. Unfortunately, only one was in Ava’s favor.

Last Friday night the Bears traveled to Marshfield for a return bout with the Blue Jays that Ava had played to an overtime finish in the Blue and Gold Tournament just after Christmas.

The Blue Jays apparently had not forgotten, and had no compassion for the visitors. The result was a 30-point loss for the Bears, 73-43.

Marshfield scored four players in double figures while Ava was led by Austin Gastineau’s 15 points.

Others scoring for the Bears were Kevin Philpott 9, Ben Loge 8, Zach Leonard 4, Kody Kutz 3, Chase Dixon 2 and Brandon Guengerich 2.

On Monday night the Bears played Conway’s junior varsity in the first round of the Conway Tournament and coasted to a 73-29 win.

Ben Loge scored 28 points in the first half and had 33 points in the game.

Coach Nathan Houk said Conway gave Loge the baseline and he took advantage of the opportunity, scoring most of his baskets on lay-ups.

Zach Leonard sat out the game due to an ankle injury suffered on Friday night, and Gastineau saw limited action, Houk said.

Leonard will be ready to go tonight when the Bears play Stoutland at 6 o’clock, according to Houk.

Scoring for the Bears in addition to Loge were Kutz 13, Dexter Fish 7, Tyler Cox 6, Phillip Eubanks 6, Philpott 4, Dixon 2 and Jesse Dean 2.

Tournament finals will be played on Saturday, with the 5th place game beginning at 4:30. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 7:30.

Other teams in the tournament are Conway, Laquey and Miller.

Next week the Bears will travel to Cabool in SCA action on Tuesday, Jan. 31, then will be back home on Friday, Feb. 3, for Hoopcoming in an SCA game with Mtn. View-Liberty.
