One Word Omitted Changed Meaning
One word added or omitted can drastically change the meaning of a statement. Such was the case last week in an article by the City of Ava concerning the electrical rates charged to the city by Sho-Me Power Corporation.
The article, which appeared on the “City Page”, read:
“While many were sympathetic to our problem, none of the state or federal government officials could force Sho-Me to do anything since, despite trying everything, there is state or federal legal authority over Sho-Me and the long-term contracts it has with the cities.”
The statement should have read:
“While many were sympathetic to our problem, none of the state or federal government officials could force Sho-Me to do anything since, despite trying everything, there is no state or federal legal authority over Sho-Me and the long-term contracts it has with the cities.”
“We sincerely apologize for the error and any confusion it might have caused.” --Peggy S. Porter, administrative director/treasurer, City of Ava.
