Aug 7, 2008

On July 2 arrests were made concerning a rash of burglaries, which occurred between June 27 and July 2. A total of five businesses were burglarized with forced entry.

One case occurred on N.W. 12th Avenue at Russell Cellular where cash and a personal laptop were stolen.

Another occurred on June 30 at Dani-n-K Toning and Gifts located on Highway 5 Bypass. Cash, hand tools, computer software and a camera were stolen. A third case involved an adjacent business, Whorton Appliance in the same building, where money was stolen.

Russell Cellular was hit for the second time in three days. Money and cell phones were stolen in this burglary; and the fifth incident involved the City of Ava Public Pool complex where both the snack shack and pool office were broken into. Money, CDs and personal items were stolen there.

On July 2 an investigative traffic stop was made by city officers with two suspects, 22-year-old Kevin D. Cates and 19-year-old Stephen T. Smith, apprehended. Both were detained for investigative purposes. Upon further investigation probable cause was determined and five arrests were made. Cates and Smith were charged with misdemeanor receiving stolen property. Receiving stolen property charges were also filed against Christopher L. Hicks, 22.

Regarding the burglaries in question, on July 18, grand jury indictments were filed against Cody R. Ingram, 18, and William J. Perryman, 20, both charged with five counts of felony burglary in the second degree, three counts of felony stealing, two counts misdemeanor stealing and six counts of misdemeanor property damage. Both Ingram and Perryman are currently being held in the Douglas County Jail on alias capius warrants, according to Sgt. Denny Hall, of the Ava Police Department.
