Wilma Fish To Entertain At
Wilma Fish will be performing at the Douglas County Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. She will be playing and telling the history of various antique folk instruments, including the mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, ukelin, hurdy gurdy, balalaika, humanatone, zither and autoharp.
Wilma is known throughout the Ozarks and the Midwest for her folk music, knowledge of folk instruments and dried apple dolls. Through the years she has collected more than 30 folk instruments which she plucks, strokes, hits with small hammers, or blows into to accompany her songs of sorrow, boundless joy and humor. She is in demand to play at anniversaries, folk festivals, club galas and folklore classes at regional colleges and universities.
In 1966, Wilma established her apple dolls business which has grown into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. Her Ozark Mountain Dolls, easily recognized by their dress and occupation of the Ozark pioneers, have been shipped all over the world, and Wilma is one of the few remaining apple doll makers of today. She still operates her doll shop in her home at Ava, not far from her childhood home of Romance.
In 1982, Wilma wrote Wilma's Apple Dolls and Romance which contains instructions for making apple dolls and gives a true-life account of growing up in the Ozarks in the mid-20th century, as well as a history of the Romance post office community.
