Mansfield Beats Lady Bears In Tournament Action Tuesday

Mansfield's Morgan Price arrives a little too late to prevent a shot from Ava freshman guard Ashton Bewley at Mansfield Tuesday night. Also pictured for Mansfield is Calista Bogart (21).

Coach Gary Greene and the Mansfield Lady Lions attacked the Ava Lady Bears with a pressure defense early Tuesday night, jumping out to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter, and from there it was an uphill battle for the Ava girls.

Ava trailed 19-6 after one quarter and matched the Lions point-for-point in the second quarter, trailing 28-15 at the half.

Mansfield defeated the Lady Bears 55-31 to advance in their own tournament. The Lady Bears will play at 7:30 Friday in the consolation bracket.

Tournament finals will be played on Saturday, beginning with the seventh place game at 3 o’clock, the consolation championship at 4:30, third place game at 6 o’clock and the championship bout at 7:30.

Senior Jacey Swofford led Ava with nine points Tuesday night as no Lady Bears reached double figures.

Others scoring for Ava were Ashton Bewley 5, Bailey Loge 5, Lauren Mendel 4, Araina Evans 4, Hailey Pedersen 2 and Kaylee Evans 2.

Next Monday night the Ava girls will play at Cabool in SCA action and that will be a varsity game only. On Tuesday night, Feb. 2, Ava will host Forsyth, then on Feb. 4 Ava will host Mtn. View-Liberty in SCA play.
