Sunday, March 17th, was the fifth Sunday in Lent, commonly called “Passion Sunday.” Altar and vestment colors are violet and crosses are veiled in purple as a visual reminder and symbol of the seriousness of the Passiontide season.
Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the Epistle for the day, Hebrews 9:11: “Christ being come an high priest of good things to come…” Jesus is the universal high priest because His sacrifice of Himself is the really effective sacrifice that replaces the ritual sacrifices of the Old Testament religious culture. Jesus is both victim and offerer and His sacrifice is eternal.
In announcements, Bishop Hartley noted that March 28th, will be Maundy Thursday communion and March 29th, will be Good Friday with, “The Stations of the Cross” service. Those services will be at 6:30 and the public is invited.
Friday evening, Chandler and Lincoln Connell and I attended the Springfield Regional Opera production of Verdi’s “La Traviata.” It was an excellent production and we all enjoyed it very much. Before the performance, we attended a dinner given by The Opera Guild at the Tower Club.
Bishop Glen Hartley holds services Sundays at 10:30am and Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at St. Francis Anglican (Traditional Episcopal) Church. Visit our website at: stfrancisavamo.org.
