Sunday, March 3 was the third Sunday in Lent. Bishop Hartley noted that we are halfway through Lent and should be re-evaluating our lives as Christians throughout the season. He based his sermon on the gospel for the day, St. Luke 11:14, in which Jesus proves his power over evil by casting out a demon, thus confounding the religious authorities who doubted him. This passage contains the famous line, : a house divided against a house falleth.” We must be united in our trust in God and are weakened by divisions.
Lincoln Connell has his official letter of acceptance to West Point along with an elegant Certificate of Appointment, and he brought them to church for us all to see. He had previously had verbal confirmation from JoAnn Emerson’s office.
Sunday afternoon I attended the Organ and Brass concert as Kingsway Methodist Church in Springfield. This annual event features the church’s magnificent pipe organ played by their organist, Sibyl Sharp along with the Missouri State University Brass Quintet. They played several classical pieces and a new piece by Drury University professor of music, Carlyle Sharpe.
