Lent began on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13 with our traditional service beginning with the chanting of The Litany or General Supplication for God’s mercy followed by the Penitential Office for Ash Wednesday, then the imposition of ashes and communion.
Sunday, Feb. 17 was the first Sunday in Lent. Altar and vestment colors are violet, the color of penitance, and morning prayer is replaced by the chanting of The Litany. This is a very ancient form of Christian worship and visitors who would like to experience it are welcome to join us and either participate or observe. Bishop Hartley explained in his sermon that Lent has been observed in Christian churches since the Council of Nicea in 325 AD as a solem preparation for Easter and is properly a season of self-examination and taking a honest look at ourselves as Christians.
We have received word that Lew Heigham, Jr., son of our founders Lew, Sr. and Nimmie Heighan, has been hospitalized in St. Louis with serious health issues and prayers are requested for his recovery. Lew is a retired Episcopal priest who served at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis. His wife, the former, Ella Jean Dixon, taught music in the Ava schools.
