Elvis Ray Payne, 78 years, passed away on Feb. 11, 2013 at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo.
Ray was born July 12, 1934 in Atlanta, Ga., to Seaborn and Dussie (Simpkins) Payne.
Ray was a resident of the Ava community for several years moving from Wichita, Kan. He was a retired computer engineer with Lear Jet and other technology companies. He had received his masters degree in math.
He was also a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean War.
On June 14, 1958 Ray and Dorothy Stusak were united in marriage and to this union four children were born. She preceded him in death in 1979. On May 27, 1981 Ray and Viola (Walker) Freeman were united in marriage in Kansas City, Mo.
Ray enjoyed working on any kind of electronics and especially computers. He also loved working on the farm and being with his animals.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Dorothy, three brothers, Harold, Bill and Curtis Payne, one sister, Joann Payne and two great-grandchildren .
Ray is survived by his wife, Viola Payne, Ava, Mo.; four children, Kenneth Payne, Wichita, Kan., Linda Freese, Grainger, Ind., Michael Payne, of Michigan, and John Payne, Wichita, Kan.; three stepchildren, Jerry Freeman, Kansas City, Mo., Connie Cox, and Robert Freeman, both of Peculiar, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Seaborn Payne Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Audrey Smith, Snellville, Ga.; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A private family memorial service for Ray will be Saturday, Feb. 16, at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Mo. Officiating will be Pastor Dale Garrison. Memorials may be made to the Evansdale Cemetery at the funeral home.
