Sunday, February 3 was sexagesima, or the second Sunday before Lent, approximately sixty days before Easter. Bishop Glen Hartley based his sermon on the epistle for the day, II Corinthians 11:19, in which St. Paul gives a sort of resume of his qualifications as apostle. We are a history-minded congregation and Fr. Glen began his sermon, as he often does, with the historical background of the scripture passage. In this case, the church at Corinth, a city in Greece, had been led by a group who criticized Paul and questioned his response to them in which he demonstrates the power of Jesus at work in him.
Congratulations to Lincoln Connell, who took second place in the state-wide VFW Essay contest held in Jefferson City over the weekend; Lincoln and his parents spent the weekend there for this event.
Friday evening Chandler Connell and I attended the Flavor and Flair event at the University Plaza in Springfield, a fund-raising event for the Springfield Symphony in which several restaurants had food booths set up where participants could sample a wide variety of food.
