Sunday, January 13 was the first Sunday after Epiphany. Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the gospel for the day, St. Luke 2:41, Jesus in the temple when he was twelve. This is one of the most popular Bible stories and contains Jesus’ first recorded words; “know ye not that I must be about my father’s business?” For his parents, this episode was a worry about their young son, and from a child’s point of view a story about overly protective parents, but for the church this episode is the manifestation of Jesus’s divinity to the Jews. The trip to the temple at this age was a preparation for Jewish boys for their entrance into manhood, but for Jesus it was his introduction to the world.
During announcements Bishop Hartley noted that Tuesday, January 15 is the 35th anniversary of the founding of St. Francis Church in 1978 and during prayers he offered a special prayer for the continuing health of the church. For a time the congregation met in private homes, then in the old Victor Plumbing Shop Building in Ava, which is now the Computer 911 business, and in 1986 the present building on West 76 was built and a few years later an addition was made with the Heigham Parish Hall named for Fr. Lew Heigham and his wife, Nimmie who founded the church. Our website is stfrancisavamo.org.
