The Ava Bears improved their season record to 8-4 with a 58-57 win over Aurora last Saturday.
Ava’s leading scorer, Austin Gastineau, took a perfect pass from Brandon Guengerich and scored the winning bucket at the buzzer.
Coach Nathan Houk said the set play followed a time out and was executed exactly like it was intended.
The Bears will host Houston Friday in an event that will include the Hoopcoming coronation between the JV and varsity games.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Marion C. Early Panthers of Morrisville will be here for three games starting with the freshman match at 5 o’clock.
Aurora, which led the Bears 23-22 at halftime, pulled out to a 45-27 lead at the end of the third quarter. But the Bears outscored the Houn Dawgs 21-12 in the final period to take the lead and the game.
Gastineau had 24 points for the Bears and Guengerich added 19, including a big 3-point basket in the second half.
Ben Loge had six points for Ava and Cooper Emerich, who returned to the lineup after being out with an injury, scored five points for the Bears. Emerich also had a 3-point bucket in the second half which helped spark Ava’s rally.
Phillip Eubanks and Caleb Miles had two points each for the Bears.
Jordan Fronbarger and Garrett Bader scored 17 points each for Aurora.
Seedings have been announced for the Conway Tournament which will be played Jan. 21-26.
The Bears are seeded No. 2 and will face Laquey in the first round at 6:30 Jan. 22.
A JV tournament will also be played the same week at Conway and Ava is also seeded second in that bracket which consists of round robin pool play.
The JV Bears will play Fordland at 5:30 Monday, Jan. 21, and Buffalo at 5:30 Thursday, Jan. 24, in the White Pool.
Finals will be held on Saturday, beginning with the fifth place game at 11 a.m. and the championship game at 2 o’clock.
