Sunday, December 2 was the first Sunday in Advent and so the beginning of a new season and a new year in the Christmas calendar, a season of expectation of the advent or coming of Christ. Altar and vestment colors are a deep royal blue appropriate for the coming king. As it is a penetential season or time of study and seriousness, altar flowers are not permitted and the Gloria at the end of the service is replaced by a kneeling hymn.
We began the service by placing the four candles on the Advent Wreath, one for each week, with a reading for each one ready by members of the congregation, and the first candle was lit.
Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the epistle for the day, Romans 13:8, “Owe no man anything but to love one another, for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.” It is the Christian’s duty to reflect God’s law to others.
On Saturday, December 1, Chandler Connell and I attended the 21st annual Midtown Victorian Homes Tour in Springfield and saw some beautiful old houses in the historic area around Drury University.
