“I’ve come to believe there is little, if any, honesty in the media, and ethic is a word they are totally unfamiliar with.” –Ronald Reagan
The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this: You cannot post “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” “Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery,” and “Thou Shall Not Lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians…It creates a hostile work environment. Anonymous
Here at Dogwood we had quite the storm come through Saturday evening and we are so pleased with the 1 ½” of rain. The storm warning radio went off a few times, the sky was constantly lit with lightning, the wind knocked over a few things, and a few lightning strikes were very close. We didn’t lose power but Bob & Dana Wagner, next door, had their power go off for a few hours. The children went out long enough to run in the rain and to bring in some hail to show us the size, of which Rory joked they were the size of olive pits (?). My home was filled with family as Rachelle is here for a few days from Gulf Port, Mississippi, her home base; as well as Regina and her son Justin visiting for a couple of weeks from Oregon. Ron, Arlene, Rex, Reanna, Rory and Debbie were here. Ron did the grilling and everyone brought something good to eat. Lots of visiting, lots of laughs, and they even got a game of Pinochle going that lasted until long after my bedtime.
Sunday, some of us made it to church and there were smiles from many parishioners as we learned other areas received much more rain than Dogwood. We are grateful for every drop.
This will be in print after the election. I sure do hope all of you made it to the polls, which is tomorrow as I pen this week’s column. As the polling places have been reduced from 26 to 13 we are expecting many people and a very, very long day of 5:00 a.m. to after 8:00 p.m. Of course, after the election the judges have to pack up everything and get it into the courthouse. I do hope you appreciate those who take on this chore, doing their civic duty. I can’t complain until next week about how many parked their vehicles on the barely surviving grass! LOL
Until next week, be well.
From the desk of Jamey Herd: Pleasant Ridge Baptist just finished a successful VBS on Saturday. I think the children attending had a wonderful time. Thanks to all that were able to help with it. Pastor and his wife, Leveta, had to attend a funeral in Kansas on Sunday so were only present for Sunday School. Morning worship was done in song by the group “Faithful”. Cindy Winslow, Sue Brown and Susan Sinclair provided some wonderful music for us.
Condolences go out to Susie in the passing of her Dad.
And yes we were hammered by another storm of hail and strong winds on Saturday evening. We lost electricity around 6 PM and didn’t get power back on till 11:30 AM on Sunday. Our son, Ron, brought his generator on Sunday to get the refrigerator and freezer cold again. He just finished doing this when the power came back on. With the heat it was hard for the freezer to maintain the frozen food. When Billy Joe went up to the church on Saturday evening to help Sue Brown set up her keyboard, there was debris in the highway and a number of trees down. Then I noticed on Sunday there was damage to Marge Hazelton’s rent house and outbuilding. What I failed to notice was the large hip roof barn was no longer standing but just a pile of rubble. The damage didn’t quite reach the church and I’ve not heard who else received damage to their property. We did receive 1 2/10th inches of rain which has made the pastures look greener. Much more is needed as several ponds around the area have gone dry or people are having to dig new wells for water.
We had to have a repairman out to work on the air conditioner at church. It didn’t want to cool yesterday (Sunday) so we were thankful that there was a wall unit to use to cool the sanctuary. It is now fixed and working again. This 100 degree plus temperatures has put a strain on the air conditioning units.
Stay cool and safe and God Bless.
