It says in John 12:42 that many of the chief rulers believed Jesus; but, being put out of the synagogue by the Pharisees was more than these rulers were willing to risk. So, instead of speaking up they chose to be silent. It was more important to ‘go along to get along’. Losing status, facing down the Pharisees, being thought poorly of by their associates weighed heavily enough that their belief took a back seat. God was literally thrown under the bus.
Abraham believed God (Romans 4:3). This is no small thing. He was 75 when God told him He would make a great nation of him (Genesis 12:2). He was 100 when Isaac was born. That’s a long time to believe without results. But, Romans 4:20 states that he did not stagger in unbelief. It can truly be said that Abraham set the bar for belief in God. No wonder God counted it unto him for righteousness.
Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, says that God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Spiritual blessings are richly provided by God. All believers have a place as a member of the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-13). Those spiritual blessings supply believers now and for eternity.
The blessings extend to heavenly places. After Christ’s resurrection, he ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). Heavenly places is found in Ephesians 1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10, and 6:12 (it says high places in verse 12 but the Greek translation is heavenly places). Immediately following that are the words in Christ. Christ is the root or the center of all these blessings.
Further study reveals blessings almost beyond comprehension. It’s wonderful to be a member of the body of Christ. Abraham was richly blessed because he believed God. It was the driving force of his life. Citizenship for believers is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). The wait is nothing compared to what’s in store. I bet Abraham felt the same way.
