Dr. Charles Harding, missionary evangelist to America, his wife, Jo, and daughter, Ceci, were guests at Bethany Baptist Church, Sunday. He brought three timely messages on God and country in an effort to keep Christians better informed, involved, and praying for our nation.
Part of being informed is to understand the history and content of the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence stated, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights;” Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Our forefathers believed that Governments are instituted to secure those unalienable rights; one of which is the right to worship in public.
Early governments put walls around their cities for protection. They would set watchmen on the walls to watch for dangers. The watchmen were supposed to call out a warning so the people could prepare to defend themselves. Isaiah 56:10-12 describes some watchmen who failed miserably to watch for Israel. Isaiah said that they were blind, ignorant, dumb dogs that cannot bark, sleeping, greedy dogs looking out for themselves. On top of that they would fill themselves with strong drink and believed that tomorrow “shall be as this day, and much more abundant.”
Israel was supposed to be a kingdom of priests. They were supposed to be witnesses to the whole world of the wonderful works of the LORD God. God had told Israel that as long as they served him and obeyed his laws, he would bless them. God would be the guardian over Israel. He would be their protector, but if they turned away and served other gods, he would turn away from them. Israel soon turned to other gods, other nations would afflict Israel, they would call upon God and God would deliver them. Then they would forget God and fall into sin again. Time and again God sent prophets to warn them. They were told that God would send them disease, famine and invasion, but as time went on, they became more and more sinful so finally God gave them up. Their spiritual watchmen had failed. Israel was carried off into captivity.
Israel should have been a witness to the whole world of what a nation could be if they served God. America should have been a witness of what a nation could be if they followed Christ. It started out well. America was blessed as no other nation has ever been blessed, but the watchmen of America, have become lax. They have become greedy for wealth, covetous, enjoying drunkenness and revelry, not ashamed of sin, calling evil good, and good evil, being proud, arrogant, and blind. Instead of sounding a warning that America must turn back to God, they try to take all mention of God out of public places. But America is in dire straits. The financial structure of America could go down today. God will judge America for failing to acknowledge the Creator, and when God does bring judgment on America, it will be final.
What can we do to postpone God’s judgment on America? What we must do is pray. Be informed, be involved, vote, and intercede for our leaders. Wake up to what is happening in America now. It is time to get to the altar.
