Glaucoma is an eye disease that can lead to blindness. If it goes untreated, the pressure in the eye rises and the eyeball itself starts to harden. It’s interesting that once it begins hardening, the vision begins to go. It’s like so many other things that harden. Once they do then the usefulness goes away. Paint, bread products, and arteriosclerosis are examples. And so it is with the heart, too.
Hebrews 3:8 says to not harden your heart. It’s a warning. Verse 13 of the same chapter says that the deceitfulness of sin hardens the heart. Like the preacher said, it’s a case of thinking that one knows better than God. When people do things they clearly know they shouldn’t, aren’t they acting as though they know better than God? There is a fellow that lives in another state. He has made the statement that he doesn’t need to go to church because he was baptized as a child. Many people have approached him and tried to persuade him to change his decision. He won’t even consider it. That’s his sign and he sticking to it.
Then there’s this other fellow. He believes in God. But, he also believes that he’s been so sinful in his life (and he has) that he doesn’t deserve God’s forgiveness. He won’t go to church, he won’t ask for forgiveness and he’s dying of cancer as this is being written. In fact, both men are dying from cancer. Is his heart hardened, too? Only God knows what is going to become of those two men.
So what will be the final outcome? As our preacher said, God sees our every secret. For Him, the lives of everyone are an open book. A day is coming when everything will catch up with us. Just knowing that there is a hell and a place of torment should rattle a few souls. Again, like our pastor said, there are no doorknobs on the inside of hell to get out but there are plenty of ways to get in.
