Special Trash Clean Up For Rural Douglas Co. May 4 & 5

Spring City Clean Up Is Also Next Week

In an effort to reduce illegal trash dumping, the South Central Solid Waste Management District will hold a special trash clean up for rural Douglas County households on May 4 and 5 at the Douglas County Maintenance Shed off Highway FF just east of Ava.

An attendant will be on site from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 5, to help people unload items and to monitor the collection site.

These two days are the only dates items can be brought in for disposal and recycling.

Dumpsters will be available for the disposal of old furniture and bulky items. A trailer will be on site for the collection of TV sets, microwaves, old computers, cell phones and electronics.

A trailer will also be on site for recycling metal items, such as appliances and scrap metal.

No roofing shingles, no brush and no construction waste will be accepted.

On Saturday, May 5 only, the district will hold a special collection for household hazardous waste such as paint, herbicides, pesticides, batteries, oil, antifreeze, televisions, microwaves and computers.

No containers larger than 5 gallons will be accepted. If you have large quantities to dispose of, call ahead at 417-932-5345.

Other similar collections will be held within the seven counties as follows:

April 28 at Summersville on the square in front of City Hall; May 12 at Winona on the square by City Hall; and May 19 at Mtn. Grove, at the city maintenance shed off Highway 95.

Ava City Clean Up

The City of Ava has announced its spring Residential Clean Up will be held the week of April 30-May 4.

This free pick-up is provided to residents of Ava to get rid of items such as chairs, sofas, mattresses, etc.

In the city, tree limbs and brush cut by the homeowner will be picked up if cut no longer than 48 inches and bundled. Limbs or brush cut by a commercial contractor will not be accepted.

Not accepted in this cleanup are tires or car parts.

The free collection will be on the city’s east side on Monday and Tuesday, April 30 and May 1, and will move to the West Ward of the city on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and 3. Collections will be completed on Friday, May 4.

Items to be picked up by the city should be placed at the curb on the designated days. There will be no call-backs.

Household garbage normally collected by the city sanitation service will not be picked up with this collection. The Sanitation Department will run its regular routes on schedule.

This Saturday, April 28, is also National Drug Take Back Day, when you can dispose of prescription drugs that are no longer needed or out of date.

These drugs can be dropped off at the parking lot of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, April 28.
