John R. (Jack) Gregg was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Lawrence, Kan., to Harry S. and Sybil M. Boles Gregg. He passed away April 22, 2012, at the age of 84 years, 8 months, at his home near Ava.
Jack attended school in Lawrence, Kan. He entered the Army just prior to the conclusion of World War II. He served 18 months in German. In 1948 he married Rose Janet Anderson and to this union two children, Brian Samuel and Angela Rose, were given. Jack and Janet moved to Ava in 2000 where he built their home. After Janet passed away in 2006 he married Maudie Mae Siroky, Feb. 22, 2008, in Eureka Springs, Ark.
Jack was an extremely talented carpenter, plumber, electrician, “jack-of-all-trades”, and artist with stained glass and metal. Jack began his construction career in Lawrence, Kan., and owned Gregg Iron Works. After moving to Topeka, he owned Gregg Construction. He built and raced midget and stock cars and later worked at Heartland Speedway.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Sybil, wife Janet, son Brian, and sister Virginia Wharton.
He is survived by his wife, Mae, of Ava; his daughter, Angela; grandson, Brian, great-granddaughter, Michelle Marlene, all of Topeka, Kan.; as well as two brothers, Charles Irven Gregg, of Ava, and Dale Hibbard Gregg, of Dodge City, Kan.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Ava Family Funeral Home Chapel, Ava. Interment will be held in Topeka, Kan., at a later date.
