Sunday, March 11 was the third Sunday in Lent. In the early church this day was known as Scrutiny Sunday because candidates for baptism were examined to determine if they were ready for baptism or confirmation which took place on Easter Sunday. Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the Epistle for the day, Ephesians 5:1, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children, and walk in love…” St. Paul then goes on to give advice on living a Christian life, saying that there are certain things a Christian must do and others we must not do. These rules that Paul lays down are in keeping with the central theme of Lent which is self-examination and self-discipline.
The service was followed by a potluck dinner and a table laden with wonderful food, followed by our bimonthy vestry meeting at which various items of church business were discussed such as the budget, building a new creche for next Christmas, and repairs to the lawn before mowing season begins. Dates were set for the next work day and picnic.
