Mtn. Grove Man Dies After Being Run Over By Trailer

A Mtn. Grove man died in a Springfield hospital last week after being run over by a trailer on a county road in Douglas County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Virgil J. Woods, 39, died at Cox South Hospital on Dec. 12.

The incident occurred at 8:35 a.m. the same day on County Road 127, seven miles south of Norwood.

The investigating officer, Tpr. Ryan Vaughan, said Donald R. Emery, 52, of Mtn. Grove, was driving a 2011 Ford and was backing the trailer when the pedestrian, Woods, was struck. The trailer then came to rest on top of the victim who was airlifted to Cox Hospital where he later died.

Two men from Gainesville were taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield following a wreck south of Ava Sunday.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported the crash occurred 5.2 miles south of Ava on Highway 5 when the northbound 2006 Chevrolet pickup the men were riding in ran off the roadway, hit an embankment and overturned.

The driver, William L. Strong, 50, of Gainesville, sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt, according to the Patrol report.

A passenger, Brandon K. Suter, 54, was not restrained and suffered moderate injuries.

The 6:40 p.m. wreck was investigated by Tpr. John Roberts, of the Highway Patrol.

An Ava teenager sustained minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 14 east of Bruner on Dec. 12.

The Highway Patrol said Jessica L. Cardwell, 19, was traveling east on Highway 14 when her 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier ran off the roadway and hit a tree.

Cardwell was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

The wreck occurred at 4:10 p.m., 1.5 miles east of Bruner in Christian. The investigating officer was Tpr. Ivy Warren.
