Fundraiser Successful For

VFW and Ava Lions

The fund raising event on Sunday, Dec. 4, sponsored by the Ava VFW Post has to be considered successful in every way.

First, the food preparation and volunteers were coordinated by Doris Haynes.  The volunteers prepared several gallons of various kinds of soup, including chili, potato soup, broccoli cheese, beefy vegetable and ham and beans.

Quarter pound hot dogs were available to those who didn’t want soup. Many youngsters demonstrated their culinary prowess by making chili dogs and adding onions and cheese.  Lastly the dessert tables had abundant assortment of cakes, cookies, brownies and pies.

At 2 o’clock every one moved to the performing arts center to listen to over two hours of great musical entertainment.  Included were the youth from Teen Harvest, under the direction of Pastor Paul Neighbour, and bluegrass music by Back Yard Bluegrass and Big Creek.

More than 20 cakes were donated and auctioned between bands with J.D. Morrison and Verl Warren joining together to sell those cakes.  The duo and their impromptu comedic selling techniques had the audience in stitches.  Many said it was a very enjoyable entertainment which brought in a large amount of money for the fundraising event. Especially enjoyable was watching Pastor Buddy Boyd of the Assembly of God Church squirm as he wrote the check for the cakes his wife purchased in the cake auction.  It was all done in humor and for a great cause.

We are proud to announce the total of the luncheon in which over 250 people were served, the music and the cake auction raised approximately $3000.  This will be a big step toward our goal of getting the septic system installed. Once again, the good citizens of Ava have joined together to help one of our own.

Anyone who still wishes to donate to this cause may make checks payable to the Ava VFW and mail to PO Box 1041, Ava MO 65608.

Members of Ava VFW Post 5993, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Ava Lions Club, on behalf of our WWII family, want to acknowledge each person or business who assisted, contributed, or attended to support this endeavor.  We could not have done it without you.  God Bless you. You have just made one family’s Christmas a very thankful occasion.
