Ava Area Animal Welfare League Junior met in regular session on December 8th, 2011. Members in attendance were: Betty Stout, Ali Hall, Karen Davis, Pat Patton, Janice Velsor, Herb Velsor, Jeri Stewart, Mary Chipps, and Marily Alms.
Members enjoyed the information given by our guest speakers from “Angel-Baby Cat Rescue” (Herb and Janice Velsor). Angel-Baby Cat Rescue (abc-rescue.org) is a non-profit organization that currently houses approximately 87 cats. The facilities for the cats are described as being “elaborate” with both indoors and outdoors areas for the cats to roam. Angel-Baby Cat Rescue has also recently won recognition for excellence on the national level. They will take in select cats in need of a home or care, but patrons should call first at 417-746-4444. Many of the cats are available for adoption. The cats at the rescue center up for adoption have been either spayed or neutered, have had and are current on all shots, and are in good health. If you would like to adopt a cat for a pet or companion, please call Herb or Janice. This organization has been funded by small grants and the Velsor’s themselves for the past several years. If you would like to help the Velsor’s in their effort to care for these wonderful animals, make a tax-deductable donation to this organization. Just call or email them.
Look in this week’s Douglas County Herald newspaper for our CAT SPECIAL SPAY/NEUTER coupons. Get a male cat neutered for just $5.00 or a female spayed for only $25.00 each. Two of our Ava area veterinarians (Dr. Johnson and Dr. Peters) have reduced the cost for these services and the AAAWLJ will help pay the difference to lower the cost to patrons. This is a WIN – WIN opportunity for our community. These coupons will only be good for one month but appointments are required by both vets and must be scheduled. We appreciate everyone helping, supporting, and donating to the AAAWLJ so that we may continue to offer these special reduced rates to the general public. Most vets require pets coming in for spay/neuter to be transported in a carrier of some type. The AAAWLJ is looking for/asking for a couple of carriers. If you have a sturdy plastic type pet carrier you would consider donating to the organization, please call Mary at 417-683-6166 (leave a message).
We have submitted a grant proposal to WRVEC for funding and should know the outcome of the proposal after December 13th. We will inform members and the community during our January meeting as to the status of the proposal.
Our next meeting date will be January 12th, 2012 at 3:30 PM in Mrs. Karen Davis’ classroom on the Ava R-1 Schools campus. Snow date will be January 19th , same time. Note that if the Ava R-1 Schools is closed or dismisses early on scheduled meeting date, we will not have a meeting. During winter months we will try to set alternate snow dates.
