Even the most cynical mind will concede that ‘intelligent design’ probably was behind creation. The correct word is God but some are still tinkering with the idea that some terrestrial being zapped creation here. (It was probably from watching too many science-fiction movies in the 60s.) Mankind has been really adept at veering off course and coming up with outlandish notions.
There’s a parable in Mark 12:1-12. This is one of the last confrontations Jesus has with the high priests, scribes, and elders of the temple. He has tried other times to persuade them to believe He is who He says He is. They ask him in Mark 11:29, “Just who do you think you are!” The parable is the last straw and Jesus doesn’t mince words.
The interesting thing is that the priests are so full of themselves that they are offended at the story. It’s a familiar one. Isaiah had related the story of the vineyard (Chapter 5) and said that is was directed at the house of Israel. Hint, hint, Jesus didn’t just pick a story about a vineyard out of thin air. Nor did He just happen to tell about the rejected stone becoming the cornerstone. It’s in Psalm 118:22. These ‘men of the cloth’ were familiar with what was being said. It was Jesus’ last shot at opening their eyes. Maybe a few of them were. It certainly looks like one of the scribes got the message because it’s related in verses 28-34 of Mark. As for the rest of them? Well, I guess they’re probably waiting for the Martians to come back.
