We had a busy and great time over the weekend, starting with the Fall Festival at church. The weather was gorgeous, simply a perfect fall day to enjoy all the activities. There was lots of singing, visiting, and a hayride to the pumpkin patch. In the evening we all gathered into the church for a pulled pork dinner with lots of side dishes to go with it.
Sunday after church was the “official” hayride out to the Caney Picnic Area. There were two trailers full of people and a convoy of vehicles following behind, winding around the ridge roads, having a great time enjoying the sunshine and fellowship. The weather was again perfect, and the trees on the mountain were finally coming into their colors, and were beautiful.
As soon as the trailers got to the picnic grounds almost all the kids and a lot of the grownups took off to go over the hill to the cave. I have never been back in the cave, I have been just inside the entrance and that is enough for me. I am some claustrophobic and from the looks of some of the kids when they come out with clay mud on their knees and elbows I don’t want to get in any place that small. I can do the cave at Silver Dollar City and it doesn’t bother me, but if it involves crawling through a space, please leave me out!
At the campground we joined several other churches that were also having their hayrides. Several from each church joined together to sing some songs and then Jeff D. Marsh brought the message before we all took off for home.
Soon after we arrived at the picnic area several of the volunteer firefighters were called out to a fire.
Thurman and Kay Whittaker are home after taking a road trip out east, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. I’m not sure all the places they went, but they went through fourteen states all up and down the east coast from Virginia to Maine and then back home and Kay said they had a wonderful time. They covered 4172 miles on their trip. She said when they started they hadn’t made up their minds which way to go, they had thought about going to Colorado. Then Thurman heard on the radio that it was snowing in Colorado, so they turned the other way and went east. Kay said they saw a lot of damage still there from Hurricane Irene and the people are still busy cleaning up from that storm.
Congratulations to Chris and Misty (Bettis) Wilkerson on their marriage. They got married last Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Honey Branch Cave and Melanie Whittaker said it was a very beautiful wedding.
