Sherman Denney, 81

Sherman Denney, 81 years, 5 months, and 12 days old, passed to heaven on Oct. 14, 2011 at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.

Sherman was born May 2, 1930 in Ava, Mo., to Benjamin Franklin and Ethel (Cox) Denney.

Sherman was the maintenance department at the Douglas County Courthouse until his retirement, and a lifelong resident of the Ava community.

He attended the Gentry Baptist Church until failing health kept him from going.

He enjoyed fishing, and gardening, especially growing roses and tomatoes. Sherman loved spending time with his children and grandchildren

Sherman was preceded by his parents; one sister, Anna Cornelison; and one brother, Lonnie Denney.

Sherman is survived by three children and their spouses, Gayle Ann and Pete Peters, Galena, Mo., Sherman Craig and Robyn Denney and David Charles and Nancy Denney, all of Ava, Mo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth and Lloyd Shumate, Ruby and Don Graham of Ava, and Loetta Dugan of Lebanon; one brother, Ben Denney and his wife Mae, Ava, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Sherman were Monday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with burial in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 16, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Officiating was the Rev. Tom Johnson.
