Some 26 firefighters from several departments in Douglas and Ozark counties met in Ava again last Saturday for training. However, the live burn that was planned was postponed because of the dry, windy conditions.
The burn is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, if weather conditions are favorable.
On the past two Saturdays, firefighters from throughout the area have gathered at a vacant house on property owned by the city for extensive training in real smoke and live fire.
Eventually, the house will be burned to the ground for demolition. However, last weekend the fire danger was extremely high due to a lack of rainfall, low humidity, and strong winds.
A spokesman for the City of Ava Fire Department said it just didn’t make sense for the fire department to start a fire when everyone else was being told to not burn.
