Ava Place

Today is a beautiful September day. The leaves are just beginning to change color in some areas. We still have roses in bloom and our holly has little sprouts growing. We have planted colorful mums in the planter boxes out front. Mums come in the most beautiful colors these days.

In the evening the fog curls leisurely through the valley, beckoning cooler nights. The full moon looks large and golden and the leaves are already falling from the black walnut trees. It will soon be time to pick walnuts. The cooler weather has inspired some to cut wood for winter heat. Soon the wood stoves will be lit to chase away the chill as dusk arrives.

We look forward at Ava Place to the fall menu. Fresh cobblers and pies of apple and pumpkin are anticipated. Wonderful pumpkin, zucchini, and apple nut breads are baked and the smell of fresh baked breads brings everyone to the dining room to enjoy coffee with their special harvest dessert.

We are planning to try specially flavored teas and ciders for the next few months. We are starting to think of harvest spices and warm cups of tea, cider or chocolate.

Our gardening has almost come to a close. We have enjoyed the fresh vegetables and fresh produce that people have brought to us.

Our activities have been less indoor since everyone seems to enjoy sitting on the porch. As fall continues sitting outside on the porch is a much cherished activity. Residents enjoy watching the daily traffic of cars and people walking to and fro. The fresh air and sunshine are uplifting. That special cup of tea or chocolate chases the chill away.

We have enjoyed Traveling Strings and our resident, David Graf, has so enjoyed playing his guitar with them. Hospice Compassus volunteers play Bingo with our residents and brought pie and ice cream to celebrate assisted living week. Our office manager, Carla, has selected the book “The Ghost Belonged To Me” by Richard Peck to read this month. The residents have enjoyed this author so we are continuing to read his literary works.

We are looking forward to the autumn season. We hope everyone enjoys the beautiful fall weather.
