A powerful lightning storm moved through the Ava area between 1 and 2 a.m. Wednesday, accompanied by periods of heavy rain. This tree in the northeast part of town exploded from a lightning strike. Herald employee Josh Hoppe, who took the picture on a phone camera, said the strike threw chunks of wood 300 feet into neighboring yards, including his own, and debris was even stuck in the shutters on his house.
